Elijah said to Elisha, “The LORD wants me to go to Bethel, but you must stay here.” Elisha replied, “I swear by the living LORD and by your own life that I will stay with you no matter what!” And he went with Elijah to Bethel.

Jeroboam asked for advice and then made two gold statues of calves. He showed them to the people and said, “Listen everyone! You won't have to go to Jerusalem to worship any more. Here are your gods who rescued you from Egypt.”

Then he put one of the gold calves in the town of Bethel. He put the other one in the town of Dan, and the crowd walked out in front as the calf was taken there. What Jeroboam did was a terrible sin.

Elisha left and headed towards Bethel. Along the way some boys started making fun of him by shouting, “Go away, baldy! Get out of here!”

Elijah then said, “Elisha, now the LORD wants me to go to Jericho, but you must stay here.” Elisha replied, “I swear by the living LORD and by your own life, that I will stay with you no matter what!” And he went with Elijah to Jericho.

Elijah then said to Elisha, “Now the LORD wants me to go to the River Jordan, but you must stay here.” Elisha replied, “I swear by the living LORD and by your own life that I will never leave you!” So the two of them walked on together.

But the boy's mother said to Elisha, “I swear by the living LORD and by your own life that I won't leave without you.” So Elisha got up and went with them.

Make promises only in my name, and do what you promise! Then all nations will praise me, and I will bless them.

These people came from our own group, yet they were not part of us. If they had been part of us, they would have stayed with us. But they left, which proves that they did not belong to our group.
