David had always obeyed the LORD's commands by doing right, except in the case of Uriah. And since Abijam was David's great-grandson, the LORD kept Jerusalem safe and let Abijam have a son who would be the next king.

I will let you live fifteen years more, while I protect you and your city from the king of Assyria. I will defend this city as an honour to me and to my servant David.

But the LORD refused to destroy Judah, because he had promised his servant David that someone from his family would always rule in Judah.

I, the LORD All-Powerful, will protect Jerusalem like a mother bird circling over her nest.”

and you can't break the agreements I have made with David's family and with the priests from the Levi tribe who serve at my altar. A descendant of David will always rule as king of Israel,

In the same way, I will never reject the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob or break my promise that they will always have a descendant of David as their king. I will be kind to my people Israel, and they will be successful again.

so tell the Israelites that I am saying: You have disgraced my holy name among the nations where you now live. So you don't deserve what I'm going to do for you. I will lead you home to bring honour to my name

But I am the LORD God of Judah, and I will have mercy and save Judah by my own power—not by wars and arrows or swords and cavalry.”

God says, “I will stand guard to protect my temple from those who come to attack. I know what's happening, and no one will ill-treat my people ever again.”

The Spirit also makes us sure that we will be given what God has stored up for his people. Then we will be set free, and God will be honoured and praised.

God was very kind to us because of the Son he dearly loves, and so we should praise God.

But I dreaded the sound of your enemies saying, ‘We defeated Israel with no help from the LORD.’ ”
