Ahaz sent a message to King Tiglath Pileser of Assyria that said, “Your Majesty, King Rezin and King Pekah are attacking me, your loyal servant. Please come and rescue me.”

“Your Majesty,” Ahab replied, “everything I have is yours, including me.”

During Pekah's rule, King Tiglath Pileser of Assyria marched into Israel. He captured the territories of Gilead and Galilee, including the towns of Ijon, Abel-Bethmaacah, Janoah, Kedesh, and Hazor, as well as the entire territory of Naphtali. Then he took Israelites from those regions to Assyria as prisoners.

The LORD helped Hezekiah, so he was successful in everything he did. He even rebelled against the king of Assyria, refusing to be his servant.

So God sent King Tiglath Pileser of Assyria to attack these Israelite tribes. The king led them away as prisoners to Assyria, and from then on, he forced them to live in Halah, Habor, Hara, and near the River Gozan.

Some time later, the Edomites attacked the eastern part of Judah again and carried away prisoners. And at the same time, the Philistines raided towns in the western foothills and in the Southern Desert. They conquered the towns of Beth-Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco, Timnah, and Gimzo, including the villages around them. Then some of the Philistines went to live in these places. Ahaz sent a message to King Tiglath Pileser of Assyria and begged for help.

So Tiglath Pileser came to Judah, but instead of helping, he made things worse.

Our LORD, you have deserted your people, Israel, because they follow customs of nations from the east. They worship Philistine gods and are close friends of foreigners.

You once trusted them to help, but now I'll let them rule you. What do you say about that? You will be in pain like a woman giving birth.

I, the LORD, have put a curse on those who turn from me and trust in human strength.

Our eyes became weary, hopelessly looking for help from a nation that could not save us.

You couldn't get enough sex, so you chased after Assyrians and slept with them. You still weren't satisfied,

Oholibah also chased after good-looking Assyrian officers, uniformed soldiers, and cavalry troops.

Even though Oholah was my wife, she continued to be a prostitute and chased after Assyrian lovers.

Assyria can't save us, and chariots can't help. So we will no longer worship the idols we have made. Our LORD, you show mercy to orphans.”

Israel is a senseless bird, fluttering back and forth between Egypt and Assyria.
