But the people of Judah disobeyed the LORD. They listened to Manasseh and did even more sinful things than the nations the LORD had wiped out.

“But, my people, Israel, you refused to listen, and you would have nothing to do with me!

So I let you be stubborn and keep on following your own advice.

You refused to answer when I called out; you paid no attention to my instructions. Instead, you did what I hated, knowing it was wrong. Now I will punish you in a way you dread the most.

Jeremiah, what do we care if you speak in the LORD's name? We refuse to listen!

So they all come and listen to you, but they refuse to do what you tell them. They claim to be faithful, but they are for ever trying to cheat others out of their money.

People of Israel, after you capture the land the LORD your God is giving you, and after you settle on it, you will say, “We want a king, just like the nations around us.”

Then you saw that King Nahash of Ammon was going to attack you. And even though the LORD your God is your king, you told me, “This time it's different. We want a king to rule us!”
