The Philistine rulers kept coming to fight Israel, but whenever David fought them, he won. He was famous because he won more battles against the Philistines than any of Saul's other officers.

It was now spring, the time when kings go to war. David sent out the whole Israelite army under the command of Joab and his officers. They destroyed the Ammonite army and surrounded the capital city of Rabbah, but David stayed in Jerusalem.

Wherever you went, I helped you and destroyed your enemies right in front of your eyes. I have made you one of the most famous people in the world.

Ahaziah sent a third army officer and fifty more soldiers. This officer went up to Elijah, then he got down on his knees and begged, “Man of God, please be kind to me and these fifty servants of yours. Let us live!

You are deeply concerned when one of your loyal people faces death.

Thinking about your teachings gives me better understanding than my teachers,

Good sense is worthy of praise, but stupidity is a curse.

From then on, whenever the king asked for advice, he found their wisdom was ten times better than that of any of his other advisers and magicians.

Act like people with good sense and not like fools.

Come to Jesus Christ. He is the living stone that people have rejected, but which God has chosen and highly honoured.

You are followers of the Lord, and that stone is precious to you. But it isn't precious to those who refuse to follow him. They are the builders who tossed aside the stone that turned out to be the most important one of all.

But knowing those things made Saul even more afraid of David, and he was David's enemy for the rest of his life.

David was a success in everything that Saul sent him to do, and Saul made him a high officer in his army. That pleased everyone, including Saul's other officers.

The next time there was a war with the Philistines, David fought hard and forced them to retreat.

I am the LORD, the God of Israel. I promised to let your family serve me as priests for ever, but now I tell you that I cannot do this any longer! I honour anyone who honours me, but I put a curse on anyone who hates me.

“David, you had the chance to kill me today. But you didn't. I was very wrong about you. It was a terrible mistake for me to try to kill you. I've acted like a fool, but I'll never try to harm you again. You're like a son to me, so please come back.”

I saved your life today, and I pray that the LORD will protect me and keep me safe.”
