One day, Jeroboam was standing at the altar in Bethel, ready to make an offering. Suddenly one of God's prophets arrived from Judah and shouted: The LORD sent me with a message about this altar. A child named Josiah will be born into David's family. He will sacrifice on this altar the priests who make offerings here, and human bones will be burnt on it.

Then he started home down a different road.

“I can't go back with you,” the prophet replied, “and I can't eat or drink anything with you.

so he went home with him and ate and drank.

“No, I wouldn't go with you, even if you offered me half of your kingdom. I won't eat or drink here either.

Don't let me want to do evil or waste my time doing wrong with wicked people. Don't let me even taste the good things they offer.

Then Moses warned the people, “Get away from the tents of these sinful men! Don't touch anything that belongs to them or you'll be wiped out.”

You know these things, and God will bless you, if you do them.

And you are my friends, if you obey me.

My friends, I beg you to watch out for anyone who causes trouble and divides the church by refusing to do what all of you were taught. Stay away from them!

I was talking about your own people who are immoral or greedy or worship idols or curse others or get drunk or cheat. Don't even eat with them!

Don't take part in doing those worthless things that are done in the dark. Instead, show how wrong they are.

Then I heard another voice from heaven shout, “My people, you must escape from Babylon. Don't take part in her sins and share her punishment.

“Tell me,” Samuel said. “Does the LORD really want sacrifices and offerings? No! He doesn't want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey him.
