At this, the angel said, “Lord All-Powerful, for 70 years you have been angry with Jerusalem and the towns of Judah. When are you ever going to have mercy on them?”

After Babylonia has been the strongest nation for 70 years, I will be kind and bring you back to Jerusalem, just as I have promised.

You will show pity to Zion because the time has come.

Our God, how much longer will our enemies sneer? Won't they ever stop insulting you?

They shouted, “Master, you are holy and faithful! How long will it be before you judge and punish the people of this earth who killed us?”

Judah was an empty desert, and it stayed that way for 70 years, to make up for all the years it was not allowed to rest. These things happened just as Jeremiah the Lord's prophet had said.

He is forever able to save the people he leads to God, because he always lives to speak to God for them.

It troubled the Lord to see them in trouble, and his angel saved them. The Lord was truly merciful, so he rescued his people. He took them in his arms and carried them all those years.

You know my foolish sins. Not one is hidden from you.

because you are furious and have thrown me aside.

How long will the ground be dry and the pasturelands parched? The birds and animals are dead and gone. And all of this happened because the people are so sinful. They even brag, “God can't see the sins we commit.”

I don't go to parties and have a good time. Instead, I keep to myself, because you have filled me with your anger.

The Lord said: Israel, I will be kind to you and let you come home. Jerusalem now lies in ruins, but you will rebuild it, complete with a new palace.

The angel who had spoken to me was dressed in linen and was standing upstream from them. So one of the two beside the river asked him, “How long before these amazing things happen?”

Our Lord, how long must I beg for your help before you listen? How long before you save us from all this violence?

Our Lord, will you keep on being angry? Will your angry feelings keep flaming up like fire?

for killing and healing, destroying and building,

I was angry with my people. So I let you take their land and bring disgrace on them. You showed them no mercy, but were especially cruel to those who were old.
