We were like a grapevine you brought out of Egypt. You chased other nations away and planted us here.

Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

Jesus then told them this story: A farmer once planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it and dug a pit to crush the grapes in. He also built a lookout tower. Then he rented out his vineyard and left the country.

Tell him that I, the Lord All-Powerful, say, “Someone will reach out from here like a branch and build a temple for me. I will name him ‘Branch,’ and he will rule with royal honors. A priest will stand beside his throne, and the two of them will be good friends.

Listen carefully, High Priest Joshua and all of you other priests. You are a sign of things to come, because I am going to bring my servant, the Chosen King.

You were a choice grapevine, but you have become a wild, useless vine.

Like a branch that sprouts from a stump, someone from David's family will someday be king.

Even before I was born, the Lord God chose me to serve him and to lead back the people of Israel. So the Lord has honored me and made me strong.

and I will always be there to help and strengthen him.

Our Lord, look down from your temple in heaven and bless us and our land. You promised our ancestors that you would give us this land rich with milk and honey, and you have kept your promise.

Help us, Lord! Don't wait! Pity your servants.

Please, Lord, look down from your holy and glorious home in the heavens and see what's going on. Have you lost interest? Where is your power? Show that you care about us and have mercy!

until the Lord looks down from heaven and helps.
