We trap ourselves by telling lies, but we stay out of trouble by living right.

Saying foolish things is like setting a trap to destroy yourself.

They curse and tell lies, and all they talk about is how to be cruel or how to do wrong.

Cursing, dishonesty, murder, robbery, unfaithfulness— these happen all the time. Violence is everywhere.

Proud and brutal people hunt down the poor. But let them get caught by their own evil plans!

But they all kept on saying, “He has been teaching and causing trouble all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has now come all the way here.”

They said, “Sir, we remember what this liar said while he was still alive. He claimed in three days he would come back from death.

Everyone answered, “We and our own families will take the blame for his death!”

When that time comes, you won't rebel against me and be put to shame. I'll do away with those who are proud and arrogant. Never will any of them strut around on my holy mountain.

Honesty can keep you safe, but if you can't be trusted, you trap yourself.

Then you are trapped by your own words,

Each of those nations sneered at you, our Lord. Now let others sneer at them, seven times as much.

God strikes their rulers senseless, then leaves them to roam through barren deserts,

All day long they attack with words and whispers.

Some of them will survive the war, the starvation, and the deadly diseases. That way, they will be able to tell foreigners how disgusting their sins were, and that it was the Lord who punished them in this way.
