I feel so empty inside— like someone starving for grapes or figs, after the vines and trees have all been picked clean.

Israel, when I, the Lord, found you long ago it was like finding grapes in a barren desert or tender young figs. Then you worshiped Baal Peor, that disgusting idol, and you became as disgusting as the idol you loved.

Samaria above a fertile valley will quickly lose its glory. It will be gobbled up like the first ripe fig at harvest season.

Nations will be stripped bare, like olive trees or vineyards after the harvest season.

It will be like an olive tree beaten with a stick, leaving two or three olives or maybe four or five on the highest or most fruitful branches. The Lord God of Israel has promised this.

You are moaning and blaming me, the Lord, for your troubles and sorrow, and for being so tired that you can't even rest.

I wish I had never been born! I'm always in trouble with everyone in Judah. I never lend or borrow money, but everyone curses me just the same.

I heard groaning and crying. Was it a woman giving birth to her first child? No, it was Jerusalem, gasping for breath and begging for help. “I'm dying!” she said. “They have murdered me.”

From all over the world songs of praise are heard for the God of justice. But I feel awful, terribly miserable. Can anyone be trusted? So many are treacherous!

Then I cried out, “I'm doomed! Everything I say is sinful, and so are the words of everyone around me. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord All-Powerful.”

But I must live as a foreigner among the people of Meshech and in the tents of Kedar.

One basket was full of very good figs that ripened early, and the other was full of rotten figs that were not fit to eat.

And the first part of the crops from their fields and vineyards also belongs to you. The people will offer this to me, then anyone in your family who is clean may have some of it.

There are many who say, “You can trust me!” But can they be trusted?

“Search Jerusalem for honest people who try to be faithful. If you can find even one, I'll forgive the whole city.
