You leaders accept bribes for dishonest decisions. You priests and prophets teach and preach, but only for money. Then you say, “The Lord is on our side. No harm will come to us.”

Everyone is greedy and dishonest, whether poor or rich. Even the prophets and priests cannot be trusted.

Your leaders have rejected me to become friends of crooks; your rulers are looking for gifts and bribes. Widows and orphans never get a fair trial.

You lying prophets promise security for anyone who gives you food, but disaster for anyone who refuses to feed you. Here is what the Lord says to you prophets:

Don't fool yourselves! My temple is here in Jerusalem, but that doesn't mean I will protect you.

Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over everyone God has placed in your care. Do it willingly in order to please God, and not simply because you think you must. Let it be something you want to do, instead of something you do merely to make money.

But you must make them be quiet. They are after money, and they upset whole families by teaching what they should not.

People cooperate to commit crime. Judges and leaders demand bribes, and rulers cheat in court.

You call Jerusalem your home and say you depend on me, the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel.

I'll give their wives and fields to strangers. Everyone is greedy and dishonest, whether poor or rich. Even the prophets and priests cannot be trusted.

But they were not like their father. They were dishonest and accepted bribes to give unfair decisions.

Moses was very angry and said to the Lord, “Don't listen to these men! I haven't done anything wrong to them. I haven't taken as much as a donkey.”

Now they are in for real trouble. They have followed Cain's example and have made the same mistake that Balaam did by caring only for money. They have also rebelled against God, just as Korah did. Because of all this, they will be destroyed.

They must not be heavy drinkers or troublemakers. Instead, they must be kind and gentle and not love money.

Some of you are evil, and you deny that you will ever get caught. But you will be killed.

You get drunk, then sleep with prostitutes; you would rather be vulgar than lead a decent life.

You stupid leaders are a pack of hungry and greedy dogs that never get enough. You are shepherds who mistreat your own sheep for selfish gain.

And don't start telling yourselves that you belong to Abraham's family. I tell you that God can turn these stones into children for Abraham.

I wish someone would lock the doors of my temple, so you would stop wasting time building fires on my altar. I am not pleased with you priests, and I refuse to accept any more of your offerings.

Its officials are roaring lions, its judges are wolves; in the evening they attack, by morning nothing is left.

Israel's officials are like ferocious wolves, ripping their victims apart. They make a dishonest living by injuring and killing people.

Others of you accept money to murder someone. Your own people charge high interest when making a loan to other Israelites, and they get rich by cheating. Worst of all, you have forgotten me, the Lord God.

Crooks accept secret bribes to keep justice from being done.

You accept bribes to let the guilty go free, and you cheat the innocent out of a fair trial.

These prophets go to people who refuse to respect me and who are stubborn and do whatever they please. The prophets tell them, “The Lord has promised everything will be fine.”

The priests, the prophets, and everyone else in the temple heard what I said,

Ezekiel, son of man, Israel's leaders are like shepherds taking care of my sheep, the people of Israel. But I want you to condemn these leaders and tell them: I, the Lord God, say you shepherds of Israel are doomed! You take care of yourselves while ignoring my sheep.

You encourage others to sin, so you can stuff yourselves on their sin offerings.

If you really want to live, you must stop doing wrong and start doing right. I, the Lord God All-Powerful, will then be on your side, just as you claim I am.

So I caused everyone to hate and despise you, because you disobeyed me and failed to treat all people alike.

The leaders of Moab and Midian left and took along money to pay Balaam. When they got to his house, they gave him Balak's message.

Their prophets lie and say, “The Lord won't punish us. We will have peace and plenty of food.”

Jerusalem's prophets are proud and not to be trusted. The priests have disgraced the place of worship and abused God's Law.
