Mark 12:1

Jesus then told them this story: A farmer once planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it and dug a pit to crush the grapes in. He also built a lookout tower. Then he rented out his vineyard and left the country.

It is like what happens when a man goes away for a while and places his servants in charge of everything. He tells each of them what to do, and he orders the guard to keep alert.

He used stories to teach them many things, and this is part of what he taught:

The kingdom is also like what happened when a man went away and put his three servants in charge of all he owned.

Moses brought our people together in the desert, and the angel spoke to him on Mount Sinai. There he was given these life-giving words to pass on to us.

and Jesus told them this story: A prince once went to a foreign country to be crowned king and then to return.

Not long after that, the younger son packed up everything he owned and left for a foreign country, where he wasted all his money in wild living.

So he answered: I have explained the secrets about God's kingdom to you. But for others I use stories, so they will look, but not see, and they will hear, but not understand.

Jesus said: I will tell you a story about a man who had two sons. Then you can tell me what you think. The father went to the older son and said, “Go work in the vineyard today!”

But I complained, “Lord God, I don't want to do that! People already say I confuse them with my messages.”

You were a choice grapevine, but you have become a wild, useless vine.

Vineyards that had 1,000 vines and were worth 1,000 pieces of silver will turn into thorn patches.

But they asked, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”

Then he taught them many things by using stories. He said: A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field.

Jesus told the chief priests and leaders to listen to this story: A land owner once planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it and dug a pit to crush the grapes in. He also built a lookout tower. Then he rented out his vineyard and left the country.

When it was harvest time, the owner sent some servants to get his share of the grapes.

Jesus told the people to gather around him. Then he spoke to them in riddles and said: How can Satan force himself out?

and told Jesus, “We don't know.” Jesus replied, “Then I won't tell you who gave me the right to do what I do.”
