In spite of this, they rebelled and disobeyed your laws. They killed your prophets, who warned them to turn back to you, and they cursed your name.

That is how it is with you, my friends. You are now part of the body of Christ and are dead to the power of the Law. You are free to belong to Christ, who was raised to life so we could serve God.

You did not choose me. I chose you and sent you out to produce fruit, the kind of fruit that will last. Then my Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me.

You refused to listen to my prophets, who kept telling you, “Stop doing evil and worshiping other gods! Start obeying the Lord, and he will let you live in this land he gave your ancestors.”

and so he hit me. Then he had me arrested and put in chains at the Benjamin Gate in the Lord's temple.

You refuse to say, “Let's worship the Lord! He's the one who sends rain in spring and autumn and gives us a good harvest.”

I tried punishing you, but you refused to come back to me, and like fierce lions you killed my prophets.

They are like trees growing beside a stream, trees that produce fruit in season and always have leaves. Those people succeed in everything they do.

For years, you were patient, and your Spirit warned them with messages spoken by your prophets. Still they refused to listen, and you handed them over to their enemies.

When Asa heard this, he was so angry that he put Hanani in prison. Asa was also cruel to some of his people.

So the Lord made sure that every prophet warned Israel and Judah with these words: “I, the Lord, command you to stop doing sinful things and start obeying my laws and teachings! I gave them to your ancestors, and I told my servants the prophets to repeat them to you.”

Zedekiah walked up to Micaiah and slapped him on the face. Then he asked, “Do you really think the Lord would speak to you and not to me?”

Jesus told the people this story: A man once planted a vineyard and rented it out. Then he left the country for a long time.

So the owner sent another servant. The renters also beat him up. They insulted him terribly and sent him away without a thing.

Hanun arrested David's officials and had their beards shaved off and their robes cut off just below the waist, and then he sent them away.
