But Jesus told them: You are always making yourselves look good, but God sees what is in your heart. The things that most people think are important are worthless as far as God is concerned.

But the Lord told him, “Samuel, don't think Eliab is the one just because he's tall and handsome. He isn't the one I've chosen. People judge others by what they look like, but I judge people by what is in their hearts.”

We may think we are doing the right thing, but the Lord always knows what is in our hearts.

So don't judge anyone until the Lord returns. He will show what is hidden in the dark and what is in everyone's heart. Then God will be the one who praises each of us.

But I know your deeds and your thoughts, and I will make sure you get what you deserve.

The Lord doesn't like anyone who is conceited— you can be sure they will be punished.

He knows what is in everyone's heart. And he showed he had chosen the Gentiles, when he gave them the Holy Spirit, just as he had given his Spirit to us.

Be beautiful in your heart by being gentle and quiet. This kind of beauty will last, and God considers it very special.

So the Lord said to him: You Pharisees clean the outside of cups and dishes, but on the inside you are greedy and evil.

But we are happy, because everyone has voluntarily given you these things. You know what is in everyone's heart, and you are pleased when people are honest.

But the man wanted to show that he knew what he was talking about. So he asked Jesus, “Who are my neighbors?”

I will even kill her followers. Then all the churches will see that I know everyone's thoughts and feelings. I will treat each of you as you deserve.

All of you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble toward everyone else. The Scriptures say, “God opposes proud people, but he helps everyone who is humble.”

God doesn't accept people simply because they obey the Law. No, indeed! All the Law does is to point out our sin.

No one had to tell him what people were like. He already knew.

Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels for everyone to see.

He told Jesus, “I have obeyed all these commandments since I was a young man.”

There are many who say, “You can trust me!” But can they be trusted?

The Pharisee stood over by himself and prayed, “God, I thank you that I am not greedy, dishonest, and unfaithful in marriage like other people. And I am really glad that I am not like that tax collector over there.

You know every heart and mind, and you always do right. Now make violent people stop, but protect all of us who obey you.

You know what is in everyone's heart. So from your home in heaven answer their prayers, according to what they do and what is in their hearts.

Then Judas bought some land with the money he was given for doing that evil thing. He fell headfirst into the field. His body burst open, and all his insides came out.

But they cheat widows out of their homes and then pray long prayers just to show off. These teachers will be punished most of all.

Jesus' enemies kept watching him closely, because they wanted to hand him over to the Roman governor. So they sent some men who pretended to be good. But they were really spies trying to catch Jesus saying something wrong.

When you go without eating, don't try to look gloomy as those show-offs do when they go without eating. I can assure you that they already have their reward.

When you pray, don't be like those show-offs who love to stand up and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners. They do this just to look good. I can assure you that they already have their reward.

When you give to the poor, don't blow a loud horn. That's what show-offs do in the synagogues and on the street corners, because they are always looking for praise. I can assure you that they already have their reward.

See how happy those arrogant people are. Everyone who does wrong is successful, and when they put God to the test, they always get away with it.”

We humans are praised when we do well, and all of us are glad to be alive.

Here is what happens to fools and to those who trust the words of fools:

Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus had asked him three times if he loved him. So he told Jesus, “Lord, you know everything. You know I love you.” Jesus replied, “Feed my sheep.

The wicked brag about their deepest desires. Those greedy people hate and curse you, Lord.

Jesus told a story to some people who thought they were better than others and who looked down on everyone else:

Then Jesus said, “When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.”

Then they all prayed, “Lord, you know what everyone is like! Show us the one you have chosen

All of our thoughts are known to God. He can understand what is in the mind of the Spirit, as the Spirit prays for God's people.
