He will go ahead of the Lord with the same power and spirit that Elijah had. And because of John, parents will be more thoughtful of their children. And people who now disobey God will begin to think as they ought to. This is how John will get people ready for the Lord.

And if you believe them, John is Elijah, the prophet you are waiting for.

You, my son, will be called the prophet of God Most High. You will go ahead of the Lord to get everything ready for him.

You surely remember how I told you that I am not the Messiah. I am only the one sent ahead of him.

They would be different from their ancestors, who were stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful to God.

Always make us eager to give, and help us be faithful to you, just as our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob faithfully worshiped you.

I saw thrones, and sitting on those thrones were the ones who had been given the right to judge. I also saw the souls of the people who had their heads cut off because they had told about Jesus and preached God's message. They were the same ones who had not worshiped the beast or the idol, and they had refused to let its mark be put on their foreheads or hands. They will come to life and rule with Christ for 1,000 years.

But you are God's chosen and special people. You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Now you must tell all the wonderful things he has done. The Scriptures say,

I pray that you will be grateful to God for letting you have part in what he has promised his people in the kingdom of light.

Respect and obey the Lord! This is the first step to wisdom and good sense. God will always be respected.

This is also how it is with people. The ones who stop doing evil and make themselves pure will become special. Their lives will be holy and pleasing to their Master, and they will be able to do all kinds of good deeds.

Everyone who is confused will understand, and all who have complained will obey my teaching.”

He did this by showing how glorious he is when he has pity on the people he has chosen to share in his glory.

I sent for you at once, and you have been good enough to come. All of us are here in the presence of the Lord God, so that we can hear what he has to say.

I saw this happen, and I tell you that he is the Son of God.

They were not God's children by nature or because of any human desires. God himself was the one who made them his children.

John will lead many people in Israel to turn back to the Lord their God.

Now, Israel, I myself will deal with you. Get ready to face your God!

You listen to the longings of those who suffer. You offer them hope, and you pay attention to their cries for help.

Hezekiah and the people of Judah celebrated, because God had helped them make this happen so quickly.

Ahab said, “So, my enemy, you found me at last.” Elijah answered: Yes, I did! Ahab, you have managed to do everything the Lord hates.

Elijah was a prophet from Tishbe in Gilead. One day he went to King Ahab and said, “I'm a servant of the living Lord, the God of Israel. And I swear in his name that it won't rain until I say so. There won't even be any dew on the ground.”

Children, stay one in your hearts with Christ. Then when he returns, we will have confidence and won't have to hide in shame.

John wore clothes made of camel's hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey.

When Elijah arrived, he told Ahaziah, “The Lord wants to know why you sent messengers to Ekron to ask Baalzebub about your injury. Don't you believe there's a God in Israel? Ahaziah, because you did that, the Lord says you will die.”

Elijah answered: You're the troublemaker—not me! You and your family have disobeyed the Lord's commands by worshiping Baal.

Then Samuel said, “Tell everyone in Israel to meet together at Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.”

John was the one the prophet Isaiah was talking about, when he said, “In the desert someone is shouting, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord! Make a straight path for him.’ ”
