Each night, bitter tears flood her cheeks. None of her former lovers are there to offer comfort; her friends have betrayed her and are now her enemies.

I weep for the pastureland in the hill country. It's so barren and scorched that no one travels there. No cattle can be found there, and birds and wild animals have all disappeared.

I wish that my eyes were fountains of tears, so I could cry day and night for my people who were killed.

I looked again and saw people being mistreated everywhere on earth. They were crying, but no one was there to offer comfort, and those who mistreated them were powerful.

I am crushed by insults, and I feel sick. I had hoped for mercy and pity, but there was none.

I'm burdened with sorrow and feel like giving up.

They were mistreated and abused by their enemies,

Jerusalem, you are sad and discouraged, tossed around in a storm. But I, the Lord, will rebuild your city with precious stones; for your foundation I will use blue sapphires.

People of Jerusalem, who will feel sorry for you? Will anyone bother to ask if you are well?
