But the Lord All-Powerful sends up in flames what nations and people work so hard to gain.

You rich people are violent, and everyone tells lies.

Though you tired yourself out by running after idols, you refused to stop. Your desires were so strong that they kept you going.

And your sinful, scheming mind is the source of all you say.

They will also be fooled by the false claims of liars whose consciences have lost all feeling. These liars

We are part of the same body. Stop lying and start telling each other the truth.

My people, have I wronged you in any way at all? Please tell me.

I've tried everything else. Now the rust must be burned away.

They say they want peace, but this lie is deadly, like an arrow that strikes when you least expect it.

The Lord replied: Lies come from the mouths of my people, like arrows from a bow. With each dishonest deed their power increases, and not one of them will admit that I am God.

You are in for trouble! The lies you tell are like ropes by which you drag along sin and evil.

They can't sleep or rest until they do wrong or harm some innocent victim.

Their words bite deep like the poisonous fangs of a snake.

Their words cut like swords, and their cruel remarks sting like sharp arrows.

You talked only about violence and told nothing but lies;

An evil person is like a woman about to give birth to a hateful, deceitful, and rebellious child.

Your words have silenced others and made them ashamed; now it is only right for you to be put to shame.

Then they struck blind everyone in the crowd, and none of them could even find the door.

You would rather do evil than good, and tell lies than speak the truth.

So you must say to them: People of Judah, I am the Lord your God, but you have refused to obey me, and you didn't change when I punished you. And now, you no longer even pretend to be faithful to me.

Even your own family has turned against you. They act friendly, but don't trust them. They're out to get you, and so is everyone else.

My people, you planted wheat, but because I was furious, I let only weeds grow. You wore yourselves out and gained only shame!

Can you ever change and do what's right? Can people change the color of their skin, or can a leopard remove its spots? If so, then maybe you can change and learn to do right.

The thick walls of that city will be torn down, and its huge gates burned. Everything that nation worked so hard to gain will go up in smoke.

“This is how Babylon will sink when the Lord destroys it. Everyone in the city will die, and it won't have the strength to rise again.” Jeremiah's writing ends here.

Don't you know that we all have God as our Father? Didn't the one God create each of us? Then why do you cheat each other by breaking the agreement God made with your ancestors?

After a while the people of Joshua's generation died, and the next generation did not know the Lord or any of the things he had done for Israel.

Good people have kind thoughts, but you should never trust the advice of someone evil.

I heard the Lord say, “My people ignore me. They are foolish children who do not understand that they will be punished. All they know is how to sin.”
