Our enemies have reached the town of Dan in the north, and the snorting of their horses makes us tremble with fear. The enemy will destroy Jerusalem and our entire nation. No one will survive.”

But they named it Dan, after one of Israel's sons, who was the ancestor of their tribe.

Sisera's horses galloped off, their hoofs thundering in retreat.

But if you are told it has been sacrificed to idols, don't cause a problem by eating it. I don't mean a problem for yourself, but for the one who told you. Why should my freedom be limited by someone else's conscience?

The Scriptures say, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”

The earth and everything on it, including its people, belong to the Lord. The world and its people belong to him.

The Israelites called a meeting of the nation. And since they were God's people, the meeting was held at the place of worship in Mizpah. Men who could serve as soldiers came from everywhere in Israel—from Dan in the north, Beersheba in the south, and Gilead east of the Jordan River. Four hundred thousand of them came to Mizpah, and they each felt the same about what those men from the tribe of Benjamin had done. News about the meeting at Mizpah reached the tribe of Benjamin. As soon as the leaders of the tribes of Israel took their places, the Israelites said, “How could such a horrible thing happen?”

Did you make them able to jump like grasshoppers or to frighten people with their snorting?

Since the days of our ancestors when our nation was young, that shameful god Baal has taken our crops and livestock, our sons and daughters.

This nation will eat your crops and livestock; they will leave no fruit on your vines or fig trees. And although you feel safe behind thick walls, your towns will be destroyed and your children killed.

But if your enemies try to rob or destroy you, I will rob and destroy them, and they will be led as captives to foreign lands.

Bows and arrows and swords are in their hands. The soldiers are cruel and show no pity. The hoofbeats of their horses echo like ocean waves crashing against the shore. The army has lined up for battle and is coming to attack you, people of Babylonia!

The earth twists and turns in torment, because I have decided to make Babylonia a desert where no one can live, and I won't change my mind.

An army will come out, like a lion from its den. It will destroy nations and leave your towns empty and in ruins.”
