Mighty armies alone cannot win wars for a king; great strength by itself cannot keep a soldier safe.

The mighty Lord All-Powerful will send a terrible disease to strike down your army, and you will burn with fever under your royal robes.

who says: I did these things by my own power because I am smart and clever. I attacked kings like a wild bull, and I took the land and the treasures of their nations.

This is how Moab and Ammon will at last be repaid for their pride— and for sneering at the nation that belongs to me, the Lord All-Powerful.

All of your allies will be killed, and your proud strength will crumble. People will die from Migdol in the north to Aswan in the south. I, the Lord, have spoken.

Pride tricks you into thinking that other nations look at you with fear. You live along the cliffs and high in the mountains like the eagles, but I am the Lord, and I will bring you down.

The Lord says: Don't brag about your wisdom or strength or wealth.

You say, “We are wise because we have the teachings and laws of the Lord.” But I say that your teachers have turned my words into lies!

We have heard of Moab's pride. Its people strut and boast, but without reason.

Here is something else I have learned: The fastest runners and the greatest heroes don't always win races and battles. Wisdom, intelligence, and skill don't always make you healthy, rich, or popular. We each have our own share of misfortune.

The Lord is my fortress! Don't say to me, “Escape like a bird to the mountains!”
