When Josiah was king, the Lord said: Jeremiah, the kingdom of Israel was like an unfaithful wife who became a prostitute on the hilltops and in the shade of large trees.

Oholibah saw all this, but she was more sinful and wanted sex more than her sister Oholah ever did.

One generation after another has set up pagan altars and worshiped the goddess Asherah everywhere in your country— on hills and mountains, and under large trees.

But your ancestors refused to listen. They were stubborn, and whenever I wanted them to go one way, they always went the other.

You have spread out your beds on the tops of high mountains, where you sacrifice to idols.

They also built their own local shrines and stone images of foreign gods, and they set up sacred poles for worshiping the goddess Asherah on every hill and in the shade of large trees.

Josiah was 8 years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled 31 years from Jerusalem.

The Lord first spoke to me in the thirteenth year that Josiah was king of Judah,

In every way, Judah and Israel have been unfaithful to me. *

They have sinned in the same way their ancestors did, by turning from me and worshiping other gods. The northern kingdom of Israel broke the agreement I made with your ancestors, and now the southern kingdom of Judah has done the same.

Will you ever decide to be faithful? I will make sure that someday things will be different, as different as a woman protecting a man.

The older one was named Oholah, which stands for Samaria; the younger one was Oholibah, which stands for Jerusalem. They became my wives and gave birth to my children.

You offer sacrifices on mountaintops and hills, under oak trees, and wherever good shade is found. Your own daughters and daughters-in-law sell themselves for sex.

My people are determined to reject me for a god they think is stronger, but he can't help.

In years gone by, the Israelites had been faithful to the Lord, but now they were quick to be unfaithful and to refuse even to listen to these judges. The Israelites disobeyed the Lord, and instead of worshiping him, they worshiped other gods.

By doing such gruesome things, they also became filthy.

You people are unfaithful! You go to fortunetellers, and you worship idols. Now pay close attention!

Jerusalem, you prostitute, listen to me.
