But I remember the agreement I made with you when you were young, and so I will make you a promise that will last forever.

When I saw you again, you were old enough to have sex. So I covered your naked body with my own robe. Then I solemnly promised that you would belong to me and that I, the Lord God, would take care of you.

Don't forget how the Lord your God has led you through the desert for the past 40 years. He wanted to find out if you were truly willing to obey him and depend on him,

You people aren't faithful to God! Don't you know if you love the world, you are God's enemies? And if you decide to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.

But I do have something against you! And it is this: You don't have as much love as you used to.

Since the time I was young, enemies have often attacked! Let everyone in Israel say:

You call me your father or your long-lost friend;

She will run after her lovers, but not catch them; she will search, but not find them. Then she will say, “I'll return to my first husband. Life was better then.”

The Lord loves the tribes of Israel, and he protects his people. They listen to his words and worship at his feet. *

What do we see approaching from the desert like a cloud of smoke? With it comes the sweet smell of spices, including myrrh and frankincense.

I will no longer even let you mention the names of those pagan gods that you called “Master.”

Israel, when I, the Lord, found you long ago it was like finding grapes in a barren desert or tender young figs. Then you worshiped Baal Peor, that disgusting idol, and you became as disgusting as the idol you loved.

When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.
