A mother is in deep despair and struggles for breath. Her daylight has turned to darkness— she has suffered the loss of her seven sons. I will kill anyone who survives. I, the Lord, have spoken.

People who once had plenty to eat must now hire themselves out for only a piece of bread. But you give the hungry more than enough to eat. A woman did not have a child, and you gave her seven, but a woman who had many was left with none.

Your magic powers and charms will suddenly fail, then you will be a widow and lose your children.

Jerusalem, once so crowded, lies deserted and lonely. This city that was known all over the world is now like a widow. This queen of the nations has been made a slave.

A third of you will die here in Jerusalem from disease or starvation. Another third will be killed in war. And I will scatter the last third of you in every direction, then track you down and kill you.

Life in the city is so bad that loving mothers have boiled and eaten their own children.

Instead of watching over you, I will watch for chances to harm you. Some of you will die in war, and others will starve to death.

Kings will tell their troops, “If we reach Jerusalem in the morning, we'll attack at noon. But if we arrive later,

But they are not only insulting me; they are also harming themselves by doing these shameful things.

You people of Judah and Jerusalem may have big plans, but here in this valley I'll ruin those plans. I'll let your enemies kill you, and I'll tell the birds and wild animals to eat your dead bodies.

The city of Babylon was like a mother to you. But it will be disgraced and become nothing but a barren desert.

You will feel my fierce anger until I have finished taking revenge. Then you will know that I, the Lord, was furious because of your disobedience.
