Jeremiah, all your friends and relatives tell lies about you, so don't trust them.

Everyone tells lies, and no one is sincere.

Brothers and sisters will betray one another and have each other put to death. Parents will betray their own children, and children will turn against their parents and have them killed.

Then the Lord said: Jeremiah, some men from Anathoth say they will kill you, if you keep on speaking for me.

But then the Lord told me that they had planned to chop me down like a tree— fruit and all— so that no one would ever remember me again.

While Gallio was governor of Achaia, some of the Jewish leaders got together and grabbed Paul. They brought him into court

I heard the crowds whisper, “Everyone is afraid. Now's our chance to accuse Jeremiah!” All of my so-called friends are just waiting for me to make a mistake. They say, “Maybe Jeremiah can be tricked. Then we can overpower him and get even at last.”

The leaders knew that Jesus was really talking about them, and they wanted to arrest him. But because they were afraid of the crowd, they let him alone and left.

The Lord All-Powerful said to me, “I will roar and attack like a fearless lion not frightened by the shouts of shepherds trying to protect their sheep. That's how I will come down and fight on Mount Zion.

The crowd joined in the attack on Paul and Silas. Then the officials tore the clothes off the two men and ordered them to be beaten with a whip.

I wish I could go into the desert and find a hiding place from all who are treacherous and unfaithful to God.

They wear themselves out, always looking for a new way to cheat their friends.

Won't you chop off all flattering tongues that brag so loudly?

Each bite will come back up, and all your kind words will be wasted.

The Lord replied: Lies come from the mouths of my people, like arrows from a bow. With each dishonest deed their power increases, and not one of them will admit that I am God.
