Those unfaithful prophets misuse their power all over the country. So God turned the pasturelands into scorching deserts.

He was furious with us and punished our nation with the fires of war. Still we paid no attention. We didn't even care when we were surrounded and scorched by flames.

Judah and Jerusalem weep as the land dries up.

You had better take seriously the need to honor my name. Otherwise, when you give a blessing, I will turn it into a curse. In fact, I have already done this, because you haven't taken to heart your duties as priests.

I will turn Jerusalem into a pile of rubble, and every passerby will be shocked and horrified and will make insulting remarks.

Our enemies refuse to admit that you are God or to worship you. They have wiped out our people and left our nation lying in ruins. So get angry and sweep them away!

“Sounds of destruction rumble from the north like distant thunder. Soon our towns will be ruins where only jackals live.”

I heard the Lord reply, “When I am finished, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah will be piles of ruins where only jackals live.”

Listen to me, you people of Jerusalem and Judah. I will abandon you, and your land will become an empty desert.

God's faithful people are dragged off and killed, and no one even cares. Evil sweeps them away,

It's better to go to a funeral than to attend a feast; funerals remind us that we all must die.

We know that all creation is still groaning and is in pain, like a woman about to give birth.

Your land will become so desolate that even your enemies who settle there will be shocked when they see it.

I see the enemy defeating us time after time, leaving everything in ruins. Even my own home is destroyed in a moment.

The Lord said: I have made my decision, and I won't change my mind. This land will be destroyed, although not completely. The sky will turn dark, and the earth will mourn.

This country will be as empty as a desert, because I will make all of you the slaves of the king of Babylonia for 70 years.

Barren fields mourn; grain, grapes, and olives are scorched and shriveled.

Give me one good reason not to punish them as they deserve. I, the Lord All-Powerful, have spoken.

I weep for the pastureland in the hill country. It's so barren and scorched that no one travels there. No cattle can be found there, and birds and wild animals have all disappeared.
