From across the rivers of Ethiopia, my scattered people, my true worshipers, will bring offerings to me.

About this same time the king of Assyria learned that King Tirhakah of Ethiopia was on his way to attack him. Then the king of Assyria sent some messengers with this note for Hezekiah:

People of Ethiopia, the sword of the Lord will slaughter you!

Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me.

On the same day I destroy Egypt, I will send messengers to the Ethiopians to announce their coming destruction. They think they are safe, but they will be terrified.

You are in for trouble if you go to Egypt for help, or if you depend on an army of chariots or a powerful cavalry. Instead you should depend on and trust the holy Lord God of Israel.

He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure. His faithfulness is like a shield or a city wall.

You have helped me, and I sing happy songs in the shadow of your wings.

Let me live with you forever and find protection under your wings, my God.

God Most High, have pity on me! Have mercy. I run to you for safety. In the shadow of your wings, I seek protection till danger dies down.

Your love is a treasure, and everyone finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.

Protect me as you would your very own eyes; hide me in the shadow of your wings.

I pray that the Lord God of Israel will reward you for what you have done. And now that you have come to him for protection, I pray that he will bless you.”

My people, I, the Lord, promise that the riches of Egypt and the treasures of Ethiopia will belong to you. You will force into slavery those tall people of Seba. They will bow down and say, “The only true God is with you; there are no other gods.”
