All who live in Samaria tremble with concern for the idols at sinful Bethel. The idol there was the pride of the priests, but it has been put to shame; now everyone will cry.

Our Lord, do just one thing for your people— make their women unable to have children or to nurse their babies.

By adding more of you priests, you multiply the number of people who sin. Now I'll change your pride into shame.

You'll have only a few children, your crops will be small, and your herds of cattle and flocks of sheep and goats won't produce many young.

Someday people will say, “Women who never had children are really fortunate!”

The Lord said: I will punish Ammon for countless crimes, and I won't change my mind. In Gilead they ripped open pregnant women, just to take the land.

You may live a long time and have a hundred children. But a child born dead is better off than you, unless you enjoy life and have a decent burial.

Let them dry up like snails or be like a child that dies before seeing the sun.

The lamps of sinful people soon are snuffed out,

The armies of Ephraim and Manasseh are majestic and fierce like a bull or a wild ox. They will run their spears through faraway nations.

Joseph, you are a fruitful vine growing near a stream and climbing a wall.

His second son was named Ephraim, which means “God has made me a success in the land where I suffered.”

Israel will lose its fortresses. The kingdom of Damascus will be destroyed; its survivors will suffer the same fate as Israel. The Lord All-Powerful has promised this.

I, the Lord, will punish and wipe out Israel. This is my solemn promise to every tribe of Israel.
