Listen, you priests! Pay attention, Israel! Listen, you members of the royal family. Justice was your duty. But at Mizpah and Mount Tabor you trapped the people.

Israel, the Lord sent me to look after you. But you trap his prophets and flood his temple with your hatred.

No one is loyal to God; no one does right. Everyone is brutal and eager to deceive everyone else.

So listen to my message, you rulers of Israel! You hate justice and twist the truth.

You priests are like a gang of robbers in ambush. On the road to Shechem you murder and commit other horrible crimes.

One day, Barak the son of Abinoam was in Kedesh in Naphtali, and Deborah sent word for him to come and talk with her. When he arrived, she said: I have a message for you from the Lord God of Israel! You are to get together an army of 10,000 men from the Naphtali and Zebulun tribes and lead them to Mount Tabor.

I, the Lord All-Powerful, have something else to say to you priests.

Israel, listen as the Lord accuses everyone in the land! No one is faithful or loyal or truly cares about God.

I, the Lord All-Powerful, have something to say to you priests. Children respect their fathers, and servants respect their masters. I am your father and your master, so why don't you respect me? You priests have insulted me, and now you ask, “How did we insult you?”

Listen to me, you rulers of Israel! You know right from wrong,

and rip you apart like a bear robbed of her cubs. I will gnaw on your bones, as though I were a lion or some other wild animal.

Egypt, I am the true king, the Lord All-Powerful, and as surely as I live, those enemies who attack will tower over you like Mount Tabor among the hills or Mount Carmel by the sea.

The Lord told me to tell you that your king and his mother must surrender their thrones and remove their crowns.

Listen, you leaders and everyone else in the land. Has anything like this ever happened before?

When Sisera learned that Barak had led an army to Mount Tabor,

Then Samuel said, “Tell everyone in Israel to meet together at Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.”

The Israelites met together at Mizpah with Samuel as their leader. They drew water from the well and poured it out as an offering to the Lord. On that same day they went without eating to show their sorrow, and they confessed they had been unfaithful to the Lord.

Every year he would go around to the towns of Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah where he served as judge for the people.

Ever since I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, I have been telling your people to obey me. But you and your ancestors

People of Israel, I rescued you from Egypt. Now listen to my judgment against you.
