All day long Israel chases wind from the desert; deceit and violence are found everywhere. Treaties are made with Assyria; olive oil is taken to Egypt.

Israel is deceitful to me, their loyal and holy God; they surround me with lies, and Judah worships other gods.

If you scatter wind instead of wheat, you will harvest a whirlwind and have no wheat. Even if you harvest grain, enemies will steal it all.

When Israel and Judah saw their sickness and wounds, Israel asked help from Assyria and its mighty king. But the king cannot cure them or heal their wounds.

The grapevine is strong and healthy, but as soon as the scorching desert wind blows, it will quickly wither.

Now you will be disgraced because of your sins. Your leaders will be swept away by the wind, and the nations you trusted will be captured and dragged to a foreign country.

Job, if you had any sense,

Later, seven other heads of grain appeared, but they were thin and scorched by a wind from the desert.

When Assyria let you down, you quickly ran to Egypt, but you'll find no help there,

And as for you, people of Judah, I'm going to send you away from my land, just as I sent away the people of Ephraim and the other northern tribes.

We had to surrender to Egypt and Assyria because we were hungry.

And so you will be swept away in a whirlwind for sacrificing to idols.

Israel is a senseless bird, fluttering back and forth between Egypt and Assyria.

Jehoram even built local shrines in the hills of Judah and let the people sin against the Lord by worshiping foreign gods.

But they tried to flatter God, and they told him lies;

Israel, you are unfaithful, but don't lead Judah to sin. Stop worshiping at Gilgal or at sinful Bethel. And quit making promises in my name—the name of the living Lord.

and to heal its wounds. But then I see the crimes in Israel and Samaria. Everyone is deceitful; robbers roam the streets.

Israel, I won't lose my temper and destroy you again. I am the Holy God— not merely some human, and I won't stay angry.
