The altars at sinful Bethel will be destroyed for causing Israel to sin; they will be grown over with thorns and thistles. Then everyone will beg the mountains and hills to cover and protect them.

At that time everyone will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” They will say to the hills, “Hide us!”

Then they shouted to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us! Hide us from the one who sits on the throne and from the anger of the Lamb.

You had better hide in caves and holes— the Lord will be fearsome, marvelous, and glorious when he comes to terrify people on earth.

Even if you escape alive, you will end up in Egypt and be buried in Memphis. Your silver treasures will be lost among weeds; thorns will sprout in your tents.

You made promises to the goddess Ashimah at Samaria; you made vows to other gods at the shrines of Dan and Beersheba. So now you will fall and never get up.

and to the happy homes in Jerusalem. The land of my people is covered with thorns.

In those days people will want to die, but they will not be able to. They will hope for death, but it will escape from them.

Get the war chariots ready, you people of Lachish. You led Jerusalem into sin, just as Israel did.

This will happen because of the terrible sins of Israel, the descendants of Jacob. Samaria has led Israel to sin, and pagan altars at Jerusalem have made Judah sin.

All who live in Samaria tremble with concern for the idols at sinful Bethel. The idol there was the pride of the priests, but it has been put to shame; now everyone will cry.

You are deceitful and disloyal. So you will pay for your sins, because the Lord will destroy your altars and images.

Give a warning on the trumpet! Let it be heard in Gibeah, Ramah, and sinful Bethel. Benjamin, watch out!

Israel, you are unfaithful, but don't lead Judah to sin. Stop worshiping at Gilgal or at sinful Bethel. And quit making promises in my name—the name of the living Lord.

You offer sacrifices on mountaintops and hills, under oak trees, and wherever good shade is found. Your own daughters and daughters-in-law sell themselves for sex.

Its palaces and fortresses will be covered with thorns; only wolves and ostriches will make their home there.

After the Festival, the people went to every town in Judah and smashed the stone images of foreign gods and cut down the sacred poles for worshiping the goddess Asherah. They destroyed all the local shrines and foreign altars in Judah, as well as those in the territories of Benjamin, Ephraim, and West Manasseh. Then everyone went home.

But Josiah was not finished yet. At Bethel he destroyed the shrine and the altar that Jeroboam son of Nebat had built and that had caused the Israelites to sin. Josiah had the shrine and the Asherah pole burned and ground into dust.

Jeroboam sinned and caused the Israelites to sin. Now the Lord will desert Israel.

This sinful thing led to the downfall of his kingdom.

It was a sin for you to make that idol, so I threw it into the fire to melt it down. Then I took the lump of gold, ground it into powder, and threw the powder into the stream flowing down the mountain.

Late in the afternoon, when the breeze began to blow, the man and woman heard the Lord God walking in the garden. So they hid behind some trees.

I, the Lord, will build a fence of thorns to block her path.

Israel, you have never stopped sinning since that time at Gibeah. That's why you will be attacked at Gibeah.

Their sacred places will be destroyed, and I will send war against the nation of King Jeroboam.”

Nineveh, now it's your turn! You will get drunk and try to hide from your enemy.

The Lord will be fearsome, marvelous, and glorious when he comes to terrify people on earth— they will hide in caves and in the hills.

City of Samaria, I'm angry because of your idol in the shape of a calf. When will you ever be innocent again?

I will break through the gates of Damascus. I will destroy the people of Wicked Valley and the ruler of Beth-Eden. Then the Syrians will be dragged as prisoners to Kir. I, the Lord, have spoken!

When I, the Lord, punish Israel for their sins, I will destroy the altars at Bethel. Even the corners of the altar will be left in the dirt.
