When anyone wants to settle an argument, they make a vow by using the name of someone or something greater than themselves.

“Will you take me to those Amalekites?” David asked. “Yes, I will, if you promise with God as a witness that you won't kill me or hand me over to my master.”

So I am ready to make an agreement with you, and we will pile up some large rocks here to remind us of the agreement.”

But Jacob said, “Promise me your birthrights, here and now!” And that's what Esau did.

“Jonathan, I swear it's true! But your father knows how much you like me, and he didn't want to break your heart. That's why he didn't tell you. I swear by the living Lord and by your own life that I'm only one step ahead of death.”

Early the next morning, Laban kissed his daughters and his grandchildren goodbye, then he left to go back home.

So Abraham got up early the next morning and chopped wood for the fire. He put a saddle on his donkey and set out with Isaac and two servants for the place where God had told him to go.

Now I want you to promise in the name of God that you will always be loyal to me and my descendants, just as I have always been loyal to you in this land where you have lived as a foreigner.”

Early the next morning Abraham gave Hagar an animal skin full of water and some bread. Then he put the boy on her shoulder and sent them away. They wandered around in the desert near Beersheba,

and said, “Gentlemen, I am your servant. Please come to my home. You can wash your feet, spend the night, and be on your way in the morning.” They told him, “No, we'll spend the night in the city square.”

Abram answered: The Lord God Most High made the heavens and the earth. And I have promised him

Abraham gave Abimelech some sheep and cattle, then the two men made a peace treaty.

Later that same day Isaac's servants came and said, “We've struck water!”
