We have not escaped any of the terrible curses written by Moses, and yet we have refused to beg you for mercy and to remind ourselves of how faithful you have always been.

Everyone in Israel has stubbornly refused to obey your laws, and so those curses written by your servant Moses have fallen upon us.

I tried punishing you, but you refused to come back to me, and like fierce lions you killed my prophets.

The people of Israel still did not turn back to the Lord All-Powerful and worship him.

I am the Lord, their God, but in all of their troubles their pride keeps them from returning to me.

The people of Israel moan and say to me, “We were like wild bulls, but you, Lord, broke us, and we learned to obey. You are our God— please let us come home.

I answered, “I know that you look for truth. You punished your people for their lies, but in spite of the pain, they became more stubborn and refused to turn back to you.”

Help me to understand your teachings, and I will think about your marvelous deeds.

Godless people are too angry to ask God for help when he punishes them.

If any of you need wisdom, you should ask God, and it will be given to you. God is generous and won't correct you for asking.

You can't argue with the Scriptures, and God spoke to those people and called them gods.

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

One of the prophets wrote, “God will teach all of them.” And so everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him will come to me.

Then he helped them understand the Scriptures.

They don't really pray to me; they just howl in their beds. They have rejected me for Baal and slashed themselves, in the hope that Baal will bless their crops.

They are flames destroying their leaders. And their kings are powerless; none of them trust me.

Bring us back to you! Give us a fresh start.

Instead of watching over you, I will watch for chances to harm you. Some of you will die in war, and others will starve to death.

No one worships in your name or remains faithful. You have turned your back on us and let our sins melt us away.

Everything has happened just as I said it would; now I will announce what will happen next.

You created me and put me together. Make me wise enough to learn what you have commanded.

Open my mind and let me discover the wonders of your Law.

Our Lord and our God, you save us! Please bring us back home and don't be angry.

He has even told you, “For 40 years I, the Lord, led you through the desert, but your clothes and your sandals didn't wear out, and I gave you special food. I did these things so you would realize that I am your God.” But the Lord must give you a change of heart before you truly understand what you have seen and heard.

You are in for trouble if you go to Egypt for help, or if you depend on an army of chariots or a powerful cavalry. Instead you should depend on and trust the holy Lord God of Israel.

“Josiah, I am the Lord! And I will see to it that this country and everyone living in it will be destroyed. It will happen just as this book says.

I, the Lord, said to Israel: You have become weary of me, but not from worshiping me.

We are unfit to worship you; each of our good deeds is merely a filthy rag. We dry up like leaves; our sins are storm winds sweeping us away.

Your friends have forgotten you; they don't care anymore. Even I have acted like an enemy. And because your sins are horrible and countless, I will be cruel as I punish you.

This disaster happened because you worshiped other gods and rebelled against the Lord by refusing to obey him or follow his laws and teachings.

You made me furious by doing all these disgusting things and by forgetting how I took care of you when you were young. Then you made things worse by acting like a prostitute. You must be punished! I, the Lord God, have spoken.
