Finally, a young man named Daniel came in, and I told him the dream. The holy gods had given him special powers, and I had renamed him Belteshazzar after my own god.

But the king's chief official gave them Babylonian names: Daniel became Belteshazzar, Hananiah became Shadrach, Mishael became Meshach, and Azariah became Abednego.

I was told that the gods have given you special powers and that you are intelligent and very wise.

“Daniel, that was the dream that none of the wise men in my kingdom were able to understand. But I am sure that you will understand what it means, because the holy gods have given you some special powers.”

I said, “Belteshazzar, not only are you the wisest of all advisors and counselors, but the holy gods have given you special powers to solve the most difficult mysteries. So listen to what I dreamed and tell me what it means:

It can't be done, except by the gods, and they don't live here on earth.”

Raise the signal flags; shout so all nations can hear— Babylon will be captured! Marduk, Babylon's god, will be ashamed and terrified, and his idols broken.

But his people remembered what had happened during the time of Moses. Didn't the Lord bring them and their leaders safely through the sea? Didn't he give them his Holy Spirit?

The gods Bel and Nebo are down on their knees, as wooden images of them are carried away on weary animals.

So the king said to them, “Who could possibly handle this better than Joseph? After all, the Spirit of God is with him.”

The king asked Daniel, “Can you tell me my dream and what it means?”

“I hear that you refuse to worship my gods and the gold statue I have set up.

where it will grow strong branches and produce large fruit. All kinds of birds will find shelter under the tree, and they will rest in the shade of its branches.
