Please pray for those of us who are left alive. The king of Assyria sent his army commander to insult the living God. Perhaps the Lord heard what he said and will do something, if you will pray.

Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz begged the Lord for help,

Sennacherib, you cursed, shouted, and sneered at me, the holy God of Israel.

In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah's rule in Judah, King Sennacherib of Assyria invaded the country and captured every walled city, except Jerusalem.

David answered: You've come out to fight me with a sword and a spear and a dagger. But I've come out to fight you in the name of the Lord All-Powerful. He is the God of Israel's army, and you have insulted him too!

These are difficult and disgraceful times. Our nation is like a woman too weak to give birth, when it's time for her baby to be born.

When these leaders went to Isaiah,

Those who survive in Judah will be like a vine that puts down deep roots and bears fruit.

It seems that you each have your own news! So if you say, “Here is news from the Lord,” you are twisting my words into a lie. Remember that I am your God, the Lord All-Powerful.

and told them that the Lord God of Israel had said: You asked Jeremiah to pray and find out what you should do.

The Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites control the land on the other side of the river. But the living God will be with you and will force them out of the land when you attack. And now, God is going to prove that he's powerful enough to force them out.

Here and now I challenge Israel's whole army! Choose someone to fight me!

You let your officials insult me, the Lord. And this is how you bragged about yourself: “I led my chariots to the highest heights of Lebanon's mountains. I went deep into its forest, cutting down the best cedar and cypress trees.

I, the Lord All-Powerful, will see to it that some who live in Jerusalem will survive.
