but the people demanded a king. So for 40 years God gave them King Saul, the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.

One day, Samuel told Saul: The Lord told me to choose you to be king of his people, Israel. Now listen to this message from the Lord:

Whatever the Lord God plans to do, he tells his servants, the prophets.

Our Lord, you are the friend of your worshipers, and you make an agreement with all of us.

After all, you really are Israel's God, the Lord All-Powerful. You've told me that you will let my descendants be kings. That's why I have the courage to pray to you like this, even though I am only your servant.

“My father can't be trying to kill you! He never does anything without telling me about it. Why would he hide this from me? It can't be true!”

I belong to God, and I worship him. Last night he sent an angel

Samuel looked at Saul, and the Lord told Samuel, “This is the man I told you about. He's the one who will rule Israel.”

They went to the town, and just as they were going through the gate, Samuel was coming out on his way to the place of worship.

The Lord often appeared to Samuel at Shiloh and told him what to say.
