David was a success in everything that Saul sent him to do, and Saul made him a high officer in his army. That pleased everyone, including Saul's other officers.

The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses knew that Jesus was talking about them when he was telling this story. They wanted to arrest him right then, but they were afraid of the people.

But they could not find a way to do it, because everyone else was eager to listen to him.

Lord God, I'm your servant, and you've made me king in my father's place. But I'm very young and know so little about being a leader.

Saul put David in charge of 1,000 soldiers and sent him out to fight.

This made Saul even more afraid of David.

Next to the king himself, Mordecai was the highest official in the kingdom. He was a popular leader of the Jews, because he helped them in many ways and would even speak to the king on their behalf.
