Dear friends, my greatest wish and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved.

and I'm angry enough to destroy them, so don't try to stop me. But I will make your descendants into a great nation.

Remember the solemn promise you made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You promised that someday they would have as many descendants as there are stars in the sky and that you would give them land.

Our LORD, you chose me to care for your people, and that's what I have done. You know everything I have said, and I have never once asked you to punish them.

I tried to help them, but they are paying me back by digging a pit to trap me. I even begged you not to punish them.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me.

I don't depend on what people say about me, but I tell you these things so that you may be saved.

I know they love God, but they don't understand

just as God says in the Scriptures, "Look! I am placing in Zion a stone to make people stumble and fall. But those who have faith in that one will never be disappointed."

I would be disobeying the LORD if I stopped praying for you! I will always teach you how to live right.

"Saul has stopped obeying me, and I'm sorry that I made him king." Samuel was angry, and he cried out in prayer to the LORD all night.

Even though Samuel felt sad about Saul, Samuel never saw him again. The LORD was sorry he had made Saul the king of Israel.
