The people of Judah met with David at Hebron and poured olive oil on his head to show that he was their new king. Then they told David, "The people from Jabesh in Gilead buried Saul."

During the meeting, David made an agreement with the leaders and asked the LORD to be their witness. Then the leaders poured olive oil on David's head to show that he was now the king of Israel.

Everyone followed their old customs. None of them worshiped only the LORD, and they refused to obey the laws and commands that the LORD had given to the descendants of Jacob, the man he named Israel.

For being friendly and kind, they paid me back with meanness and hatred.

My enemies will be ashamed and terrified, as they quickly run away in complete disgrace.

I have not betrayed a friend or had pity on an enemy who attacks for no reason.

My love for him will last, and my agreement with him will never be broken.

"I won't break my agreement or go back on my word.

You are now angry, God, and you have turned your back on your chosen king.

You have always ruled, and you are eternal.

If you promised God that you would be loyal to the king, I advise you to keep that promise.

I answered, "I know that you look for truth. You punished your people for their lies, but in spite of the pain, they became more stubborn and refused to turn back to you."

At that time King Herod caused terrible suffering for some members of the church.

Saul shouted to his bodyguards, "These priests of the LORD helped David! They knew he was running away, but they didn't tell me. Kill them!" But the king's officers would not attack the priests of the LORD.

You can see for yourself that the LORD gave me the chance to catch you in the cave today. Some of my men wanted to kill you, but I wouldn't let them do it. I told them, "I will not harm the LORD's chosen king!"
