Our stubborn ancestors refused to obey-- they forgot about the miracles you had worked for them, and they were determined to return to Egypt and become slaves again.

You warned them to turn back and discover true life by obeying your laws. But they stubbornly refused and continued to sin.

I worship you with all my heart. Don't let me walk away from your commands.

Some merciless people are trying to trap me, but I never turn my back on your teachings.

You reject all deceitful liars because they refuse your teachings.

Put down those proud people who hurt me with their lies, because I have chosen to study your teachings.

Though you are above us all, you care for humble people, and you keep a close watch on everyone who is proud.

Moses and Aaron went to the king and told him that the LORD God of the Hebrews had said: How long will you stubbornly refuse to obey? Release my people so they can worship me.

Now I know that the LORD is the greatest God, because he has rescued Israel from their arrogant enemies."

The Lord will do what he has planned against Jerusalem and Mount Zion. Then he will punish the proud and boastful king of Assyria,

Israel sinned and refused to obey the LORD or follow his instructions. So the LORD let them be robbed of everything they owned.

That's why I don't allow your priests to serve me; I let Israel be destroyed and your people disgraced.

Jeremiah, what do we care if you speak in the LORD's name? We refuse to listen!

That's why I say: "Praise and honor the King who rules from heaven! Everything he does is honest and fair, and he can shatter the power of those who are proud."

The day of judgment is certain to come. And it will be like a red-hot furnace with flames that burn up proud and sinful people, as though they were straw. Not a branch or a root will be left. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken!

If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.

Then Jesus said, "When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored."

But Christ rescued us from the Law's curse, when he became a curse in our place. This is because the Scriptures say that anyone who is nailed to a tree is under a curse.

Israel, today I am giving you the laws and teachings of the LORD your God. And if you don't obey them all, he will put many curses on you.

Right now I call the sky and the earth to be witnesses that I am offering you this choice. Will you choose for the LORD to make you prosperous and give you a long life? Or will he put you under a curse and kill you? Choose life!

In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say, "God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble."

All of you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble toward everyone else. The Scriptures say, "God opposes proud people, but he helps everyone who is humble."
