The LORD is their defender, and what you do to them, he will do to you.

For all who are mistreated, the LORD brings justice.

But you, LORD, tell them, "I will do something! The poor are mistreated and helpless people moan. I'll rescue all who suffer."

Our LORD, you are true to your promises, and your word is like silver heated seven times in a fiery furnace.

Our LORD, I know that you defend the homeless and see that the poor are given justice.

Your people will praise you and will live with you because they do right.

(A psalm by David.) Fight my enemies, LORD! Attack my attackers!

Every bone in my body will shout: "No one is like the LORD!" You protect the helpless from those in power; you save the poor and needy from those who hurt them.

Show that I am right, God! Defend me against everyone who doesn't know you; rescue me from each of those deceitful liars.

Our God, from your sacred home you take care of orphans and protect widows.

Do not mistreat widows or orphans.

If you do, they will beg for my help, and I will come to their rescue.

You destroy yourself by being cruel and violent and refusing to live right.

God All-Powerful is there to defend them against you.

You defeated my people. Now you're in for trouble! You've never been destroyed, but you will be destroyed; you've never been betrayed, but you will be betrayed. When you have finished destroying and betraying, you will be destroyed and betrayed in return.

But if your enemies try to rob or destroy you, I will rob and destroy them, and they will be led as captives to foreign lands.

But I, the LORD All-Powerful, will rescue and protect them. I will bring peace to their land and trouble to yours.

My people, I am on your side, and I will take revenge on Babylon. I will cut off its water supply, and its stream will dry up.

I have sinned against the LORD. And so I must endure his anger, until he comes to my defense. But I know that I will see him making things right for me and leading me to the light.

You robbed cities and nations everywhere on earth and murdered their people. Now those who survived will be as cruel to you.

The LORD All-Powerful said: I'm now on my way to judge you. And I will quickly condemn all who practice witchcraft or cheat in marriage or tell lies in court or rob workers of their pay or mistreat widows and orphans or steal the property of foreigners or refuse to respect me.

I'll let the LORD decide which one of us has done right. I pray that the LORD will punish you for what you're doing to me, but I won't do anything to you.

I pray that the LORD will help me escape and show that I am in the right.

David heard that Nabal had died. "I praise the LORD!" David said. "He has judged Nabal guilty for insulting me. The LORD kept me from doing anything wrong, and he made sure that Nabal hurt only himself with his own evil." Abigail was still at Carmel. So David sent messengers to ask her if she would marry him.
