In spite of this, they rebelled and disobeyed your laws. They killed your prophets, who warned them to turn back to you, and they cursed your name.

"You have made me very angry by rejecting me and making idols out of gold. Jeroboam, you have done more evil things than any king before you.

I even hid one hundred of the LORD's prophets in caves when Jezebel was trying to kill them. I also gave them food and water.

He answered, "LORD God All-Powerful, I've always done my best to obey you. But your people have broken their solemn promise to you. They have torn down your altars and killed all your prophets, except me. And now they are even trying to kill me!"

One day the LORD said to some of his prophets:

King Manasseh has done more disgusting things than the Amorites, and he has led my people to sin by forcing them to worship his idols.

But the people only laughed and insulted these prophets. They ignored what the LORD God was trying to tell them, until he finally became so angry that nothing could stop him from punishing Judah and Jerusalem.

not even when they made an idol shaped like a calf and insulted you by claiming, "This is the god who rescued us from Egypt."

You warned them to turn back and discover true life by obeying your laws. But they stubbornly refused and continued to sin.

For years, you were patient, and your Spirit warned them with messages spoken by your prophets. Still they refused to listen, and you handed them over to their enemies.

You refused correction and rejected my commands.

Then tell them I have said: People of Judah, your ancestors turned away from me; they rejected my laws and teachings and started worshiping other gods.

I tried punishing you, but you refused to come back to me, and like fierce lions you killed my prophets.

I brought you here to my land, where food is abundant, but you made my land filthy with your sins.

But when our ancestors took over the land, they did not obey you. And now you have punished Israel with disaster.

I told the people: You escaped the disaster that struck Judah, but now the LORD warns you to stay away from Egypt.

"We've sinned! We've rebelled against you, and you haven't forgiven us!

But the children also rebelled against me. They refused to obey my laws and teachings, and they treated the Sabbath as any other day. I became angry and decided to punish them in the desert.

But the renters grabbed those servants. They beat up one, killed one, and stoned one of them to death.

Is there one prophet that your ancestors didn't mistreat? They killed the prophets who told about the coming of the One Who Obeys God. And now you have turned against him and killed him.

Your flocks and herds produced milk and yogurt, and you got choice meat from your sheep and goats that grazed in Bashan. Your wheat was the finest, and you drank the best wine.

Israel, you grew fat and rebelled against God, your Creator; you rejected the Mighty Rock, your only place of safety.

Before long, the Israelites began disobeying the LORD by worshiping Baal, Astarte, and gods from Syria, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia.
