The earth was barren, with no form of life; it was under a roaring ocean covered with darkness. But the Spirit of God was moving over the water.

My people are crushed, and so is my heart. I am horrified and mourn.

When they ask why you are groaning, tell them you have terrifying news that will make them faint and tremble in fear and lose all courage. These things will happen soon. I, the LORD God, make this promise!

On the day this tree dies and goes to the world below, I, the LORD God, will command rivers and streams to mourn its death. Every underground spring of water and every river will stop flowing. The mountains in Lebanon will be covered with darkness as a sign of their sorrow, and all the trees in the forest will wither.

He was so frightened that his face turned pale, his knees started shaking, and his legs became weak.

The very sight of them is frightening.

Judah and Israel are like trees with branches broken by their enemies. But the LORD is going to restore their power and glory. *

Everyone who sees you will turn away and shout, "Nineveh is done for! Is anyone willing to mourn or to give her comfort?"

The LORD wiped out nations and left fortresses crumbling in the dirt. Their streets and towns were reduced to ruins and emptied of people.

We know that the LORD your God rules heaven and earth, and we've lost our courage and our will to fight.
