My enemies, don't be glad because of my troubles! I may have fallen, but I will get up; I may be sitting in the dark, but the LORD is my light.

I have never laughed when my enemies were struck by disaster.

They will be so kind and merciful and good, that they will be a light in the dark for others who do the right thing.

My enemies are chasing me, crushing me in the ground. I am in total darkness, like someone long dead.

Others will stumble and fall, but we will be strong and stand firm.

None of you respect the LORD or obey his servant. You walk in the dark instead of the light; you don't trust the name of the LORD your God.

Those who walked in the dark have seen a bright light. And it shines upon everyone who lives in the land of darkest shadows.

You made fun of my people and treated them like criminals caught in the act.

People of Babylonia, you were glad to rob my people. You had a good time, making more noise than horses and jumping around like calves threshing grain.

The LORD said: People of Jerusalem, when you stumble and fall, you get back up, and if you take a wrong road, you turn around and go back.

You hated Israel so much that you clapped and shouted and celebrated.

just as you celebrated when Israel was destroyed. Your nation of Edom will be nothing but a wasteland. Then everyone will know that I am the LORD.

But in my fierce anger, I will turn against those nations, and especially the Edomites, because they laughed at you the loudest and took over your pasturelands.

In the future, I will rebuild David's fallen kingdom. I will build it from its ruins and set it up again, just as it used to be.

Why did you celebrate when such a dreadful disaster struck your relatives? Why were you so pleased when everyone in Judah was suffering?

Keep on groaning with pain, you people of Jerusalem! If you escape from your city to the countryside, you will still be taken as prisoners to Babylonia. But later I will rescue you from your enemies.

You, my enemies, said, "The LORD God is helpless." Now each of you will be disgraced and put to shame. I will see you trampled like mud in the street.

I, the LORD God, will protect Jerusalem. Even the weakest person there will be as strong as David, and David's kingdom will rule as though my very own angel were its leader.

But for you that honor my name, victory will shine like the sun with healing in its rays, and you will jump around like calves at play.

Although your people live in darkness, they will see a bright light. Although they live in the shadow of death, a light will shine on them."

I tell you for certain that you will cry and be sad, but the world will be happy. You will be sad, but later you will be happy.

Once again Jesus spoke to the people. This time he said, "I am the light for the world! Follow me, and you won't be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life."

I want you to open their eyes, so that they will turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then their sins will be forgiven, and by faith in me they will become part of God's holy people."

The Scriptures say, "God commanded light to shine in the dark." Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ.

In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again.

And the city did not need the sun or the moon. The glory of God was shining on it, and the Lamb was its light.

Never again will night appear, and no one who lives there will ever need a lamp or the sun. The Lord God will be their light, and they will rule forever.
