When it was harvest time, the owner sent some servants to get his share of the grapes.

What more could I have done for my vineyard? I hoped for sweet grapes, but bitter grapes were all that grew.

You refused to listen to my prophets, who kept telling you, "Stop doing evil and worshiping other gods! Start obeying the LORD, and he will let you live in this land he gave your ancestors."

But the renters grabbed those servants. They beat up one, killed one, and stoned one of them to death.

But when they saw the man's son, they said, "Someday he will own the vineyard. Let's kill him! Then we can have it all for ourselves."

Jesus asked, "When the owner of that vineyard comes, what do you suppose he will do to those renters?"

The chief priests and leaders answered, "He will kill them in some horrible way. Then he will rent out his vineyard to people who will give him his share of grapes at harvest time."

The king sent some servants to tell the invited guests to come to the banquet, but the guests refused.

Jesus then told them this story: A farmer once planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it and dug a pit to crush the grapes in. He also built a lookout tower. Then he rented out his vineyard and left the country.

But they said to themselves, "Someday he will own this vineyard. Let's kill him! That way we can have it all for ourselves."

Jesus asked, "What do you think the owner of the vineyard will do? He will come and kill those renters and let someone else have his vineyard.

Jesus told the people this story: A man once planted a vineyard and rented it out. Then he left the country for a long time.
