When Jesus was alone with the twelve apostles and some others, they asked him about these stories.

Wise friends make you wise, but you hurt yourself by going around with fools.

Then he taught them many things by using stories. He said: A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field.

After Jesus left the crowd and went inside, his disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the story about the weeds in the wheat field."

He answered: I have explained the secret about God's kingdom to you, but for others I can use only stories.

He did not tell them anything without using stories. But when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.

Then Jesus said, "If you have ears, pay attention."

After Jesus and his disciples had left the crowd and had gone into the house, they asked him what these sayings meant.
