and he asked Joram, "Why did you come to me? Go talk to the prophets of the foreign gods your parents worshiped." "No," Joram answered. "It was the LORD who led us out here, so that Moab's army could capture us."

Then he sent a messenger to Elisha. Elisha was home at the time, and the important leaders of Israel were meeting with him. Even before the king's messenger arrived, Elisha told the leaders, "That murderer is sending someone to cut off my head. When you see him coming, shut the door and don't let him in. I'm sure the king himself will be right behind him."

Before Elisha finished talking, the messenger came up and said, "The LORD has made all these terrible things happen to us. Why should I think he will help us now?"

You punished us because of our terrible sins. But you did not punish us nearly as much as we deserve, and you have brought some of us back home.

and let you know that wisdom has many different sides. You would then discover that God has punished you less than you deserve.

that's why you attack God with everything you say.

Some of you had foolishly committed a lot of sins and were in terrible pain.

We are ruined by our own stupidity, though we blame the LORD.

The LORD your God is angry, and on every street corner your children lie helpless, like deer trapped in nets.

The people answered, "We are wounded and doomed to die. Why did we say we could stand the pain?

So don't bother to cry out for relief from your pain.

The LORD's kindness never fails! If he had not been merciful, we would have been destroyed.

and let it rest during the time that you are in a foreign country, paying for your rebellion against me and my laws.

I have sinned against the LORD. And so I must endure his anger, until he comes to my defense. But I know that I will see him making things right for me and leading me to the light.

He prayed: I am your servant, LORD, so why are you doing this to me? What have I done to deserve this? You've made me responsible for all these people,

The next day the people of Israel again complained against Moses and Aaron, "The two of you killed some of the LORD's people!"

Everyone was scorched by its great heat, and all of them cursed the name of God who had power over these terrible troubles. But no one turned to God and praised him.
