The Scriptures say that the Messiah will come from the family of King David. Doesn't this mean that he will be born in David's hometown of Bethlehem?"

You made a solemn promise to David, when you said, "I, the LORD, promise that someone in your family will always be king.

David, one of your descendants will always be king."

Like a branch that sprouts from a stump, someone from David's family will someday be king.

Someday I will appoint an honest king from the family of David, a king who will be wise and rule with justice.

Bethlehem Ephrath, you are one of the smallest towns in the nation of Judah. But the LORD will choose one of your people to rule the nation-- someone whose family goes back to ancient times.

Jesus Christ came from the family of King David and also from the family of Abraham. And this is a list of his ancestors.

They told him, "He will be born in Bethlehem, just as the prophet wrote,

'Bethlehem in the land of Judea, you are very important among the towns of Judea. From your town will come a leader, who will be like a shepherd for my people Israel.' "

This very day in King David's hometown a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord.

So Joseph had to leave Nazareth in Galilee and go to Bethlehem in Judea. Long ago Bethlehem had been King David's hometown, and Joseph went there because he was from David's family.

But how could that be? No one knows where the Messiah will come from, but we know where this man comes from."

One day he said, "Samuel, I've rejected Saul, and I refuse to let him be king any longer. Stop feeling sad about him. Put some olive oil in a small container and go visit a man named Jesse, who lives in Bethlehem. I've chosen one of his sons to be my king."

"A man named Jesse who lives in Bethlehem has a son who can play the harp," one official said. "He's a brave warrior, he's good-looking, he can speak well, and the LORD is with him."

Samuel did what the LORD told him and went to Bethlehem. The town leaders went to meet him, but they were terribly afraid and asked, "Is this a friendly visit?"

and Saul asked, "Who are you?" "I am David the son of Jesse, a loyal Israelite from Bethlehem."
