and the people gathered all around him. They said, "How long are you going to keep us guessing? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly!"

Elijah stood in front of them and said, "How much longer will you try to have things both ways? If the LORD is God, worship him! But if Baal is God, worship him!" The people did not say a word.

Then Jesus explained clearly what he meant. Peter took Jesus aside and told him to stop talking like that.

Everyone became excited and wondered, "Could John be the Messiah?"

The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and temple helpers to ask John who he was. He told them plainly, "I am not the Messiah."

Once again the Jewish leaders picked up stones in order to kill Jesus.

They answered, "We are not stoning you because of any good thing you did. We are stoning you because you did a terrible thing. You are just a man, and here you are claiming to be God!"

I have used examples to explain to you what I have been talking about. But the time will come when I will speak to you plainly about the Father and will no longer use examples like these.

"Who are you?" they asked Jesus. Jesus answered, "I am exactly who I told you at the beginning.

Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?"

The man's parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. The leaders had already agreed that no one was to have anything to do with anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah.

This wonderful hope makes us feel like speaking freely.
