Some years later God decided to test Abraham, so he spoke to him. Abraham answered, "Here I am, LORD."

And so, I ask you, God, why pick on me?

But he knows what I am doing, and when he tests me, I will be pure as gold.

I am sick all day, and I am punished each morning.

Don't bow down and worship idols. I am the LORD your God, and I demand all your love. If you reject me, I will punish your families for three or four generations.

Now take my people to the place I told you about, and my angel will lead you. But when the time comes, I will punish them for this sin."

Those enemies are now dead and can never live again. You have punished them-- they are destroyed, completely forgotten.

And so I will purify the hearts of my people just as gold is purified in a furnace. I have no other choice.

Many people will have their hearts and lives made pure and clean, but those who are evil will keep on being evil and never understand. Only the wise will understand.

All who do evil are shameless, but the LORD does right and is always fair. With the dawn of each day, God brings about justice.

Then I will purify them and put them to the test, just as gold and silver are purified and tested. They will pray in my name, and I will answer them. I will say, "You are my people," and they will reply, "You, LORD, are our God!"

He also gave you manna, a kind of food your ancestors had never even heard about. The LORD was testing you to make you trust him, so that later on he could be good to you.

Your faith will be like gold that has been tested in a fire. And these trials will prove that your faith is worth much more than gold that can be destroyed. They will show that you will be given praise and honor and glory when Jesus Christ returns.
