Elisha left and headed toward Bethel. Along the way some boys started making fun of him by shouting, "Go away, baldy! Get out of here!"

I have always lived right, and God answered my prayers; now friends make fun of me.

And those who insult me are helpless themselves.

Conceited people sneer at me, but I obey your Law.

Rulers and judges gossip about me, and drunkards make up songs to mock me.

You will each be cruel to friends and neighbors. Young people will insult their elders; no one will show respect to those who deserve it.

Some of the people started spitting on Jesus. They blindfolded him, hit him with their fists, and said, "Tell us who hit you!" Then the guards took charge of Jesus and beat him.

He told them, "You brought Jesus to me and said he was a troublemaker. But I have questioned him here in front of you, and I have not found him guilty of anything that you say he has done.

But the whole crowd shouted, "Kill Jesus! Give us Barabbas!"

One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!"

The Jewish leaders were jealous and got some worthless bums who hung around the marketplace to start a riot in the city. They wanted to drag Paul and Silas out to the mob, and so they went straight to Jason's home.

It is like one of their own prophets once said, "The people of Crete always tell lies. They are greedy and lazy like wild animals."
