Then Abimelech warned his people that anyone who even touched Isaac or Rebekah would be put to death.

The LORD replied, "All right, Satan, do what you want with anything that belongs to him, but don't harm Job." Then Satan left.

and said: "We bring nothing at birth; we take nothing with us at death. The LORD alone gives and takes. Praise the name of the LORD!"

After each feast, Job would send for his children and perform a ceremony, as a way of asking God to forgive them of any wrongs they may have done. He would get up early the next morning and offer a sacrifice for each of them, just in case they had sinned or silently cursed God.

My friends, I beg you for pity! God has made me his target.

Then the LORD asked, "What do you think of my servant Job? No one on earth is like him--he is a truly good person, who respects me and refuses to do evil. And he hasn't changed, even though you persuaded me to destroy him for no reason."

Try striking Job's own body with pain, and he will curse you to your face."

"All right!" the LORD replied. "Make Job suffer as much as you want, but just don't kill him."

Satan left and caused painful sores to break out all over Job's body--from head to toe.

his wife asked, "Why do you still trust God? Why don't you curse him and die?"

But now you feel discouraged when struck by trouble.

and telling them, "Don't touch my chosen leaders or harm my prophets!"

You are the LORD's people, but you made him terribly angry, and he struck you with his mighty arm. Mountains shook, and dead bodies covered the streets like garbage. The LORD is still angry, and he is ready to strike you again.

They keep making me angry by sneering at me, while offering sacrifices to idols in gardens and burning incense to them on bricks.

They will go around in great pain and will become so hungry that they will angrily curse their king and their gods. And when they try to find help in heaven

Then the glorious LORD All-Powerful ordered me to say to the nations that had raided and robbed Zion: Zion is as precious to the LORD as are his eyes. Whatever you do to Zion, you do to him.

Then I heard a voice from heaven shout, "Our God has shown his saving power, and his kingdom has come! God's own Chosen One has shown his authority. Satan accused our people in the presence of God day and night. Now he has been thrown out!

And because of their painful sores, they cursed the God who rules in heaven. But still they did not stop doing evil things.

Hailstones, weighing about a hundred pounds each, fell from the sky on people. Finally, the people cursed God, because the hail was so terrible.

Everyone was scorched by its great heat, and all of them cursed the name of God who had power over these terrible troubles. But no one turned to God and praised him.
